Flight Instructor Rating

A grade 3 Flight Instructor Rating (FIR) allows you to give flying training in all sequences for a Private Pilot Licence and a Commercial Pilot Licence and for the issue of a flight crew rating and aircraft endorsement for a single engine aircraft.

To be eligible to commence a grade 3 FIR course you must:

•  Hold a Commercial Pilot Licence
•  Command Instrument Rating  or Night VFR Rating
•  Hold a current class 1 aviation medical certificate
•  Hold or be eligible to hold an aviation security identification card

Instructors

Our Chief Flying Instructor Tony Powell and Senior Base Instructor Mark Munn are at hand at any time before, during or after the course to answer questions and provide assistance.

Course Times
Our FIR course is conducted periodically throughout the year, contact us to find out upcoming course dates.

Course Components
A FIR consists of three main components: flying, teaching and theory.
Flying
In order to gain a FIR with Flight Options you will complete the following before attempting the FIR flight test.:
•  40.5 hours dual flying
•  14 hours mutual flying (with a fellow trainee)
•  11 hours dual flying in a simulator
•  10 hours mutual flying in a simulator
Teaching and Theory
Prior to practical flight training you must:
•  Pass a theory examination on the principles and methods of instruction
In conjunction with flight training you will:
•  Prepare and present classroom briefings and pre-flight briefings on each sequence

Course Length
The minimum time taken to complete a grade 3 FIR course is 12 weeks, this is dependent on variables such as weather conditions and student advancement.

Location
The Flight Options FIR course is conducted at our Sunshine Coast based flight school, located on the Sunshine Coast Airport, QLD, Australia.

Upgrading your FIR
In addition to the grade 3 qualification, Flight Options can also provide training for existing instructors who wish to move to a grade 1 or 2 rating, or to obtain multi-engine training approval or instrument training approval.
